                        Biography in progress

Efren was born in the state of Zacatecas in a small pueblo named Florencia de Benito Juarez. (Benito Juarez is known in Mexican history for his famous quote “ El respeto al derecho ajeno es la paz ” which means “The respect to others rights is peace”;). Well, technically that’s where Efren was born but he was actually born in a ranch names Tacoaleche that is in the jurisdiction of Florecia, a ranch owned by his father’s family in the outskirts of the town of Florecia de Benito Juarez. On the day of his birth, his mother was alone in the adobe house while the father was out working. His mother was alone with the partera that day. On November 20th, 1977 a child was born who was named Efren Luna.

At an early age his family would be constantly moving back and forth from Mexico to the USA. The family would soon separate. When he was 5, Efren and his 2 siblings would end up living with his father. Many years would pass by before he would be reunited with his mother. But He grew up with many relatives at different period of his childhood as his father would leave to work in the USA. Some years, his father would leave Efren and his siblings with his grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins or even family friends. Eventually, when Efren was about the age of 10 his father decided to have his children live with him so he brought them to the USA once again. He grew up thereafter in the City of Long Beach, California. Efren then was happy to know that he will finally spend time with his father even though he had grown up without his mother.

But his happiness would soon be shattered. Six moths later his dad died from an accident at work. The troubles would come back because now he would end up leaving with uncles and aunts. At this point Efren’s life had been a rocky road and he would attend school and work simultaneously to be able to afford his own needs. Having grown up in the ghetto and surrounded by the pressures of living in the hood. Negative influences were all over. The early nineties was a rough period for any teen growing up in the hood of any city in Los Angeles area because of the gang violence and the turf wars between gangs. He was never a gang member but the gangs would not discriminate if you were caught in the middle that was it. Also the racial gang war in Long Beach was during his teenage life and that would be one more struggle to fight. He managed to graduate high school in the city of Long Beach.

The life saver for Efren would come soon but not easy. Efren found comfort in making simple drawings. He learned that he could copy an image and make a drawing from it. His high school art class was a big influence in shaping Efren’s mind and aspire to become an artist. Due to financial struggles he entered the workforce immediately after high school. Two years later he made a choice to enrol in college and made a determination to accomplish his goal. That would be to receive a degree in the field of Art. He achieved his educational goals and received an AA in Art from Long Beach City College and a BFA in Drawing and Painting from California State University of Long Beach.

Now the fun begins for Efren as he has made Art part of his life. [More to be continued]
